Esther is excited for a healthy pregnancy!

Esther Achieng
Dear Subash,

Esther comes from Kombe village and is well known at the clinic. She is an 18 year old house wife and in the past she has been treated for back complications by the MED25 clinic staff. Esther had a miscarriage about a year ago and she blamed it on malaria and her back complication. The excitement on her face was unbelievable as she was being given the antenatal kit.

Each kit includes a mosquito net to sleep under, water treatment drops to provide clean water for her entire pregnancy, a laboratory test for ongoing evaluations of maternal health, and medications including malaria prophylaxis, deworming, ferrous sulfate and folic acid. In addition, mothers visit the Med25 clinic each month during their pregnancy to receive maternal education and check ups from clinic professionals.

Esther feels that two of her fears, back problems and the risk of malaria, have been taken away. Her focus is now preparation for her baby’s arrival! Thank you Subash for giving Esther and her family something to smile about.

Penina Continues to Work Hard!

penina
Dear Tracy and Rob,

Penina has worked as a Community Health Worker (CHW) for almost 20 years. Starting with UNICEF in 1992, Penina saw first hand how bringing health care and treatment to people in rural communities helps decrease the death rate of treatable illnesses. Penina knows that the hard work she has done pays off for her community, as she watches many recover from diseases like malaria, tapeworm, and cholera.

Penina was born and raised just 4km away from the MED25 Clinic. When asked about her schooling, Penina replies ‘I was one of the lucky ones’. As a female in her community, it is rare to graduate from high school (in this district only 11% of women attend high school even for a single year). With the support of her family, she was able to graduate with a high school diploma, a luxury that many women in her village have not had. After completing high school, Penina started a family and continued to pursue education by completing her CHW certificate. In this picture, Penina (left) is working with a teacher from one of the schools she serves planning their upcoming health education day for 1st and 2nd grade students.

Thanks to your donation, Penina has the stipend she needs for the next month to support her husband and seven children. While you are supporting Penina, you are also very much supporting her village, Chamakowa- Penina serves over 180 households. Through your donation alone, you are bringing a CHW to more than 1,100 individuals. Thank you so much for supporting Penina and Chamakowa Village!

Grace travels for quality care!

grace
Dear Tom,

Grace comes from one of the islands in Lake Victoria and heard about the MED25 clinic from another woman in her community. Like other patients who are starting to come to the clinic, Grace had to travel for many hours to receive healthcare. While this discourages others in her community from seeking healthcare, Grace knew how important it was to receive antenatal care for her first pregnancy.

Grace can travel back to her home and know that she has everything she needs to care for her child throughout her pregnancy. Grace says she is excited to come back every month and continue with her antenatal education and prenatal vitamins. Although it is a long day of travel, Grace knows that all the travel will be worth it when she delivers a healthy child. Thank you!

Dear Ron,

Hellen is 32 years old, married, and expecting her 5th child. Like many other mothers, Hellen’s focus is always on her children- ensuring that they can go to school, receive health care, and there is enough food for everyone. This means that Hellen often times sacrifices her own needs for those of her children. After finding out she was pregnant, Hellen worried she didn’t have money to get the antenatal care she needed. When coming to the clinic today, she was overwhelmed to learn that you took care of that for her.

Hellen was brought to tears by your generosity. She returned home in peace knowing that every month she can come to the clinic and get all of her needs met for herself and her fifth child.  Thank you for your generous gift of antenatal care for Hellen!
